Holiplanet’s Venice guide

Make the most of your time in Venice

Venice is a city of six sestieri and a lagoon of islands, crossed on foot and by waterbus rather than by car. Its art often stays in the rooms it was painted for, from Titian at the Frari to Tintoretto at San Rocco. Choose one neighbourhood as your base, plan the last stretch of every journey, and keep time for the lagoon: glass on Murano, colour on Burano and the quiet of Torcello. This guide brings together landmarks, local food and practical details for a short visit or a longer stay.

Arrive well · Explore locally

Getting Here & Getting Around

Venice’s historic centre has no cars beyond Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto. You arrive by train at Santa Lucia, by bus or water shuttle from Marco Polo Airport, then continue on foot or by ACTV waterbus.

01 · Travel essentials

Getting here

By train: choose Venezia Santa Lucia for the historic centre; Venezia Mestre is on the mainland. Ask your accommodation for its nearest waterbus stop and the walking route from there.

From Marco Polo Airport (VCE): ATVO’s Venice Airport Bus Express runs directly to Piazzale Roma in about 20 minutes. Alilaguna water shuttles serve the city by boat: the Orange line via Rialto and Sant’Angelo, the Blue line via Murano, Lido, San Zaccaria and San Marco. For a late arrival, check the last departure for your date.

02 · Travel essentials

Getting around

Walking and the ACTV waterbus are the basis of a historic-centre stay. Line 1 travels the length of the Grand Canal; line 12 leaves Fondamente Nove for Murano, Mazzorbo, Torcello and Burano. A stop name alone is not enough: check the line, direction and the floating platform before boarding.

Choose a single ticket or a tourist travel card around the journeys you actually plan, including any island day. A short walk on a map can include several bridges; use the city’s accessible itineraries for step-free routes.

03 · Travel essentials

Taxis and transfers

Road taxis stop at Piazzale Roma; inside the historic centre a taxi means a private water taxi. For a water taxi, agree the pickup point, landing, luggage and total price before you board. Alilaguna is the shared boat alternative from the airport.

Ask your hotel whether a boat can reach its door: a canal-side address does not guarantee a private landing. On departure, allow separately for the walk, the boat or bus and the airport itself.

Day trips · the lagoon

Islands of glass, lace and silence

The lagoon islands are part of the city’s story and easy to reach by waterbus. Choose one or two per day and check the return boat before you set out.

Plan the day out

Start from Fondamente Nove

Line 12 leaves Fondamente Nove roughly every 30 minutes for Murano, Mazzorbo, Torcello and Burano; Burano is about 45 minutes away. For Torcello, change at Burano to line 9. Late in the evening, the night line replaces line 12.

A scuola is not always a school

The Scuole Grandi were lay confraternities with charitable aims; their wealth explains rooms as rich as San Rocco.

Plan ahead · seasons & practical tips

When to go and what to know

Venice works all year: spring and autumn for walking, summer for the Lido and long evenings, winter for quieter museums and Carnival.

SpringMarch – May

Mild days for walking the sestieri and the islands; the Biennale Arte 2026 opened on 9 May.

SummerJune – August

Long evenings, the Lido beaches and the busiest weeks. Walk early and late, and book museums ahead.

AutumnSeptember – November

The Biennale Arte runs until 22 November 2026 and La Fenice opens its season in November. Watch the tide forecast.

WinterDecember – February

Misty mornings, quieter calli and full museum seasons, with Carnival in late winter.

Acqua alta

High tides are most frequent from autumn to early spring. Follow the tide forecast in the hi!tide app or the city’s alerts, and pack waterproof footwear if a high tide is expected.

Access fee: trial ended

The 2026 trial of the Venice access fee for day visitors ended on 27 July 2026. Check the municipal portal for any decision on future years before your trip.

Biennale and La Fenice dates from their official sites; access-fee status from cda.ve.it, checked 19 October 2026.

Shopping & local makers

Bring home something made in Venice

Look for objects whose maker you can name: glass, masks, paper and books. Ask where a piece was made and how; a little curiosity is the best protection against imitations.

A workshop making original papier-mâché carnival masks by hand, with mask-decorating courses for families and groups. Compare traditional shapes with contemporary designs, and book a course separately from a shopping visit.

Murano glass

Buy from furnaces and shops that name the maker and provide documentation; the Murano Glass Museum helps you recognise techniques first.

Burano lace

Lace-making is Burano’s traditional craft. Handmade pieces take a long time to make, which is reflected in the price.

Marbled paper and bookbinding

Venetian marbled paper, notebooks and prints are light to carry and made in small workshops across the centre.

Food from the Rialto

For edible souvenirs, look for dried pasta, rice for risotto and baicoli biscuits in the delis around the Rialto Market.

Check opening hours before visiting; many independent workshops close for lunch and on Sundays.
