HOLIPLANET · Two bases, different journeys
Welcome to Ao Nang & Koh Lanta
At Ao Nang, the practical geography is a beach road, boat counters and limestone headlands. On Koh Lanta, it is a chain of west-coast beaches with villages, mangroves and an older trading settlement across the island. They belong to the same province, but offer different ways to spend a day.
Choose Ao Nang for a compact mainland base and short journeys to Railay. Choose Koh Lanta when you want several nights beside one beach, with time for cooking, an east-coast visit or a boat excursion. Combining them works best with a week rather than a succession of overnight stops.
This guide separates the two bases throughout. A transfer to Saladan is not a transfer to a southern Lanta beach, and an Ao Nang hotel does not have road access to Railay. Those differences matter more than adding another attraction to your list.
HOLIPLANET · Arrivals and everyday journeys
Getting Here & Getting Around
Plan the arrival around your actual beach, pier and luggage, rather than treating Krabi province as one interchangeable destination.
Getting here
Krabi Airport to Ao Nang. Krabi International Airport (KBV) is the direct airport base for this itinerary. Krabi Shuttle lists private cars, SUVs and minibuses serving Ao Nang, Klong Muang and Koh Lanta. Request a quote for your hotel, passenger count and bags; these are different routes, not one airport fare.
Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta. Arrange a through road transfer to the accommodation rather than a drop at a generic island meeting point. Ask the operator to confirm the crossing arrangements, the last usable connection for your flight and whether the final beach transfer is included. A late flight should have a confirmed onward plan before departure.
Ao Nang to Koh Lanta by ferry. Aonang Travel’s route page lists Noppharat Thara–Saladan at 10:30–12:45, with an adult fare of THB 700 and child fare of THB 500. Crucially, it excludes 1 May–10 November 2026: do not plan this ferry for an October transfer. The published 2 hours 15 minutes is boat time; add check-in, pickup and the journey from Saladan to your beach. Recheck the date before buying.
Arriving from Phuket. Compare the operator’s current marine departures with a through road transfer. A sailing from Phuket Town is not an airport pickup. Keep the final night near the departure point if an early flight makes an island connection impractical.
Getting around
Ao Nang on foot. Use the seafront and nearby restaurant streets for short outings. Noppharat Thara and inland hotels need their own walking or pickup plan; being described as “Ao Nang” does not guarantee a beachfront location.
Railay by boat. Tourism Authority of Thailand lists passenger longtails from Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara, about 20 minutes aboard and THB 100 per person each way. Confirm the counter’s current fare, departure beach, loading arrangements and return before leaving. Shared departures can involve waiting; sea conditions affect the trip.
Koh Lanta by area. Saladan, Long Beach, Klong Nin, Kantiang and Old Town are separate destinations. Group stops on the same coast and arrange the return when booking a driver. Do not assume that a beach taxi is a scheduled island-wide bus or that an app will find a car at a remote beach.
Access and luggage. Ask the specific boat operator whether boarding involves sand, steps or wading and describe any mobility needs before booking. A provider’s general accessibility symbol is not confirmation that a particular pier or boat suits your journey.
Taxis and transfers
Airport rides by app. Grab’s Krabi Airport page confirms airport service and identifies International Arrival Gate 17 as its international pickup point. Follow the live instructions for your terminal rather than using that gate for every arrival.
For GrabCar, inspect the quote before confirming; GrabTaxi follows a different pricing arrangement. A published airport page does not guarantee an immediately available driver or prove coverage throughout Koh Lanta. For remote drop-offs or an early return, book a confirmed transfer.
Private transport. Ask for a written total showing the exact beach, pier or hotel, passenger and baggage allowance, crossing charges and waiting conditions. For families, request the child-seat arrangement directly. A booking request is not a confirmed pickup until the provider accepts it.
Late arrivals. Do not rely on a daytime boat listing as a night service. Have your accommodation confirm either a suitable late transfer or a mainland overnight stop. During unsettled weather, allow a separate day between an optional excursion and an important onward connection.
Apps to download

Google’s offline mode does not provide offline walking or public-transport directions; keep a saved meeting-point note as well.Official app downloads · Offline-map instructions
- Thai WeatherThe Thai Meteorological Department’s app provides forecasts and weather information for Thailand. Use it alongside the operator’s decision on whether a sailing will run; a weather app does not authorise a boat departure.Official TMD download page · Android and iOS
App downloads and transport purchases are different things. Keep data access available for live quotes, bookings and updated pickup instructions.

HOLIPLANET · Coastal highlights
Discover Ao Nang
Ao Nang & Noppharat Thara
Use Ao Nang’s seafront as an orientation walk before choosing a boat trip. Restaurant streets, beach access and departure counters form the practical centre of a short stay. Noppharat Thara extends the coastal outing, with a different meeting point for some ferries and tours.
For an arrival afternoon, keep this a walk and a meal rather than another transfer. For a departure morning, confirm the exact pier on the ticket: “Ao Nang” can refer to the wider resort area, not the place where your boat boards.
Railay & Phra Nang
Railay rewards a day built around the peninsula rather than a rushed photo stop. Arrive by longtail, walk between its beach areas and leave time for Phra Nang’s limestone setting and cave shrine. The shrine is a place of local belief as well as a visitor landmark.
Buy the outward journey with the return plan understood. Keep valuables protected during boarding and follow the boat crew’s instructions. A calm morning departure is not a guarantee that conditions will stay the same all afternoon.
Hong Island & its lagoon
Hong Island is a separate day excursion from Ao Nang, with a beach, limestone scenery and a lagoon whose boat access depends on the tide. A viewpoint reached by 419 steps offers another perspective for visitors who want the climb.
Ask which stops, park entry and equipment the excursion includes. Choose between enjoying the beach and adding the staircase rather than assuming every activity must be completed. Arrange the tour through an operator that confirms the actual route for the day’s sea conditions.
Keep one mainland day flexible
A rest day in Ao Nang gives the trip resilience when a boat excursion is cancelled or moved. Stay within the beach-and-town area, choose a longer lunch or arrange an activity with a confirmed indoor or sheltered setting.
For travellers who have already visited the region, the useful upgrade is often more time in one place rather than more island names. Keep a list of two land-based alternatives, then decide after checking the forecast and the operator’s update. Do not book every remaining hour before arrival.
HOLIPLANET · Island discoveries
Discover Koh Lanta
Long Beach & Phra-Ae
Phra-Ae, commonly called Long Beach, is a useful west-coast base when the beach is the centre of the stay. Plan a morning walk, time near your accommodation and an evening meal within the same area. A beach holiday does not need a vehicle outing every day.
Check the position of a proposed room against the actual beach access, restaurants and road. Two properties using the same beach name may offer different daily walks. Choose the location that matches your routine rather than judging only the room photographs.
Klong Nin & the west coast
Use Klong Nin as a distinct beach area when comparing accommodation along Koh Lanta’s western side. Keep a west-coast day geographically simple: one beach base, a meal nearby and a return that does not depend on finding transport late in the evening.
When visiting from another part of the island, arrange the return before the outward journey. For a longer stay, test the local routine on foot: beach access, groceries and the place you would eat on an ordinary day matter as much as the view.
Kantiang & the southern headland
Ba Kan Tiang is a southern beach base; the national-park area lies farther south. Treat the coastline and the park as a planned outing with your own transport arrangements. They are not a short extension of a Saladan walking route.
Mu Koh Lanta National Park includes both land and marine areas. Check the specific area you intend to visit and current access before leaving. A land visit does not prove that every offshore island or marine excursion is operating on the same date.
Lanta Old Town
Give the east coast its own outing. Old Town’s waterfront settlement offers a different setting from the western beaches and is a useful place for a slow walk, a meal and small independent shops. Explore public streets and respect the boundaries of homes and businesses.
Combine it with a confirmed community mangrove excursion only when the timing works. Otherwise, keep the two as separate half-days. A return pickup arranged before lunch is more useful than trying to improvise a ride after your visit.

Lanta Old Town: look towards the water
Old Town sits on Koh Lanta’s east coast, away from the main west-coast beach sequence. Make it a separate outing: walk the public waterfront streets, pause for a meal and notice how the settlement relates to the sea.
This is a living neighbourhood rather than an open-air museum. Buy directly from the shops you choose, ask before photographing people or interiors, and avoid entering private waterfront structures. Arrange the return journey with the same driver so the visit does not end with an uncertain pickup.
Thung Yee Pheng: visit with a local guide
The mangroves at Thung Yee Pheng offer a different setting from the west-coast beaches. TAT’s community-tourism information identifies the village’s eco-tourism service centre as the contact for arrangements.
Ask the provider what the excursion includes, which boat is used and where to meet. Choose this as a dedicated morning or afternoon with a return transfer, rather than adding it to an already full day. Let the local operator explain the tidal conditions and the route.
HOLIPLANET · Learn, cook and explore
Experiences worth a half-day
Time for Lime
Time for Lime now locates its cooking school behind and connected to Lanta Animal Welfare; do not navigate to an old beachfront address from an outdated guide. The current day class starts at 11am and lasts about five hours, including the welfare-centre visit.
The programme accommodates vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian cooking, with specific limits on dietary adaptations. Read these before booking. The current evening option is for adults aged 18 and over. Use the school’s live calendar for the date, and confirm the selected pickup point.
Lanta Thai Cookery School
Lanta Thai Cookery School is at 689 Moo 2, Phra-Ae, Saladan. It offers hands-on Thai cooking with a published choice of dishes. Choose it when you want an activity connected to ingredients and technique rather than another island transfer.
Confirm the session, menu, dietary requirements and pickup directly. Build the rest of the day around the class instead of treating it as a quick lunch stop. Keep the recipe notes: they can turn the next market visit into something more specific than browsing.
HOLIPLANET · Routes that leave room to stay
Suggested itineraries
Three days in Ao Nang
Day one: settle in, locate your boat counter and walk the seafront before dinner. Keep arrival day flexible rather than adding a distant excursion.
Day two: take a morning longtail to Railay, walk between the west beach and Phra Nang, then return on the arrangement confirmed at departure. Allow the day rather than squeezing it between transfers.
Day three: choose one island excursion, such as Hong, if conditions allow. In poor weather, switch to a cooking class or a restaurant-led day on land. Start and finish at your Ao Nang accommodation; see Transport for the boat and pickup distinctions.
Three days in Koh Lanta
Day one: settle into your chosen west-coast beach and arrange the next day’s transport. A relaxed afternoon is useful after a long airport transfer.
Day two: book an east-coast outing to Old Town, with a return pickup and time for lunch. Add a mangrove visit only if a community provider confirms the timing; do not assume that separate excursions connect automatically.
Day three: choose the southern national-park area or a cookery experience. A full cooking session replaces another half-day activity. Keep the evening near your accommodation rather than repeatedly crossing the island.
One combined week
Use three nights in Ao Nang and four on Koh Lanta as a planning starting point. Move the balance towards Lanta for a beach-centred stay, or towards Ao Nang when short boat excursions matter more.
Make the transfer day a transfer day: check out, travel, settle in and explore the immediate beach. In October 2026, use a confirmed road option rather than the Aonang Travel ferry excluded from the operating calendar. For a short holiday, choosing one base may provide more usable time than adding a second hotel.
HOLIPLANET · Different tables for different days
Dining & local flavours
Use a few contrasting meals to explore the area: southern Thai dishes inland from the beach road, seafood with a view, and an international dinner when the group wants a change. These selections are based on the venues’ documented food and setting; no unverified ratings or awards are attached.
KoDam Kitchen · Ao Nang
KoDam Kitchen lists two branches: the original Ao Nang venue and an Oceanview location. Choose the branch before requesting directions or booking. The menu includes southern sour curry with sea bass, fried fish with herbs and malindjo leaves with egg, alongside broader Thai favourites. This is a useful first meal when you want to compare several dishes at one table.
Tell the restaurant about dietary needs rather than assuming a dish name describes every ingredient. Use its branch selector and current menu to plan the visit.
Lae Lay Grill · Ao Nang
Lae Lay Grill combines seafood with a hillside view of Ao Nang. It publishes daily opening from 11am to 10pm and an address at 89 Moo 3, Ao Nang. For a sunset meal, book the table and the return transport together; do not assume a particular table will be available on arrival.
Contact +66 75 661 588 or laelaygrill89@gmail.com for the current arrangements.

Carnivore Steak & Grill · Ao Nang
Carnivore offers a European steakhouse alternative, with meat, seafood and a children’s menu. Its published service runs daily from noon to the last order at 10pm. It is a practical choice when your group wants a different meal from a run of Thai seafood dinners.
Compare the current cuts, portion sizes and prices before ordering. Book through the venue’s own reservation route and confirm the location rather than relying on a similarly named restaurant elsewhere.
Rak Talay · Ba Kan Tiang
Rak Talay, at Pimalai, is a beachfront Thai and international seafood option for a day already based around Kantiang. The resort lists lunch and dinner from 11am to 11pm, with the last order at 10:30pm. Confirm access and reservations if you are staying elsewhere; it is not a reason to improvise a long island transfer late at night.
For restaurant bookings, Pimalai publishes +66 75 607 999. Its other venues have different menus and hours, so name the restaurant when enquiring.
The complete restaurant directory is still under verification. These editorial recommendations do not represent the required 30-entry directory.

HOLIPLANET · Markets, small purchases and time off
Shopping, wellness & local life
Ao Nang: the beachfront commercial streets offer practical beachwear, travel essentials and small souvenirs. Plan purchases around what you need for the next few days. Ask about the material and place of manufacture before describing an item as locally made; the location of the shop alone does not establish its origin.
Saladan: use the northern arrival area as a practical stop for supplies and services before heading to a southern beach. TAT identifies Saladan as a concentration of shops, banks, dive businesses and clinics. It is a useful transport-and-errands stop rather than a reason to cross the island every day.
Old Town: combine its shops with the east-coast route in the culture section. A small purchase, conversation and unhurried waterfront lunch fit the place better than a tightly timed shopping circuit.
Wellness: book with an identified provider and ask about the actual treatment, duration and setting. Layana operates as an adults-only resort for guests aged 18 and over; confirm visitor access before making a spa or dining journey. Do not assume a resort’s facilities are open to non-residents.
HOLIPLANET · Three ways to finish the day
Evenings at your own pace
Ao Nang seafront
Keep the first evening close to the beach road. A walk followed by dinner makes sense after an airport journey or a day on the water. Pick a place where you can see the menu and the route home rather than planning a remote stop solely around a sunset photograph.
The seafront is also a useful place to confirm tomorrow’s boat arrangements in person while counters are operating. Finish those practical details before the evening becomes an outing of its own.
Sundowners at Layana
Sundowners Bar and Lounge is a named beachfront option at Layana on Phra-Ae Beach. The resort publishes cocktails, mocktails and snacks, with service into the evening. Its 18-plus policy matters for families.
Confirm non-resident access and book any return transport before setting out from another beach. This suits a planned drinks stop rather than an assumption that every west-coast resort admits walk-in visitors.
Stay beside your Lanta beach
One evening without a cross-island drive can be the most useful part of a longer beach stay. Choose a walk and dinner within the area where you are sleeping, with a return route that suits the group.
When weather changes, keep the evening flexible rather than chasing a viewpoint. The distinction is practical: a nearby meal uses less holiday time than repeatedly returning to a distant nightlife area.
HOLIPLANET · Pick the right base before the room
Stay in Ao Nang & Koh Lanta
Ao Nang or Railay?
Stay in central Ao Nang when walking to restaurants and reaching mainland transport are priorities. Check the hotel’s actual map position: an inland property can require a vehicle for the beach.
Railay offers a different arrival experience because the final approach is by boat. Rayavadee publishes its own pier-and-boat arrangements; follow the property’s instructions rather than assuming an Ao Nang taxi can reach its lobby. For visits before 21 October 2026, review its current notices about the main pool and Raitalay Terrace works.
Koh Lanta: north, middle or south?
Choose your beach before comparing room categories. A stay near Saladan or Long Beach supports a different daily pattern from one around Kantiang, farther south. Count the journeys you actually intend to make, including dinner and airport departure.
Layana is an 18-plus option on Phra-Ae/Long Beach. Pimalai is at Ba Kan Tiang Beach. Compare each property’s transfer arrangements, age rules and facilities directly. These are examples of distinct bases, not a Booking-score ranking or a replacement for the hotel directory.
HOLIPLANET · From a holiday base to an everyday routine
Living & property
Choose the routine you want
Ao Nang offers a mainland base with road connections to Krabi town and the airport. Koh Lanta spreads daily life across separate beaches and villages. For a first longer stay, test the neighbourhood where you would actually sleep, shop and eat rather than choosing from a holiday photograph.
On Lanta, compare a northern base near Saladan and Phra-Ae with the quieter southern beaches. Include the east-coast journey if Old Town or a particular community is part of your routine. A low room rate can be outweighed by repeated private transfers.
Ask questions that change the budget
Request a written monthly quote that separates rent, electricity, water, cleaning and internet. Ask who responds to maintenance issues, whether the connection suits your work, and what services operate during your planned season. These are comparison questions, not a claim that all properties provide the same package.
For remote work, test the connection in the exact unit and workspace. For a family stay, check school and healthcare requirements against the actual address. For a longer booking, an initial short stay can help you understand the road, the beach and the evening journey before committing to the full period.

HOLIPLANET · Four details that change the visit
Did you know?
A peninsula can still require a boat
Railay is part of the mainland coast, but its visitor approach from Ao Nang is by boat. Plan for boarding and the return journey, rather than treating it as a road stop.
A ferry homepage can hide a seasonal gap
Aonang Travel’s overview lists Ao Nang–Lanta daily, while the specific booking page excludes 1 May–10 November 2026. Check the dated route page rather than relying on the overview.
Old Town faces the other coast
Lanta Old Town is on the east coast. It belongs in a separate route from the western beach strip, which helps explain why a short list of stops can still require a driver.
A cooking school has moved
Time for Lime’s current booking page places it behind Lanta Animal Welfare. An older beachfront description is not a reliable meeting point for today’s class.
HOLIPLANET · Small decisions before you book
Plan your visit
Start with dates and transport. Check the marine forecast and each operator’s dated timetable before making a boat connection the foundation of the holiday. In October 2026, the Ao Nang–Lanta ferry described above is outside its operating period. A road transfer and a flexible excursion day are separate decisions.
Choose one main outing per day. Railay, a Hong island excursion, a cooking session and an east-coast Lanta route each deserve their own usable block of time. They are not nearby stops on a single walking circuit.
Keep the return in the booking. Record the pier or hotel meeting point, provider contact, pickup time and what happens if conditions change. Save those details where you can read them without data.
Match access to the actual journey. Ask about steps, beach boarding, luggage and walking surfaces. For a family or someone with limited mobility, a specific answer from the hotel or operator is more useful than a general “accessible” label.
Explore another base. For a different Andaman stay, see the published Phuket Island City Guide. This guide keeps Ao Nang and Koh Lanta together while distinguishing their transport, neighbourhoods and pace.
