Bari works best from a base within walking distance of both its halves. Murat, the nineteenth-century street grid named after Joachim Murat, is the modern centre: Via Sparano and Via Argiro for shopping, Corso Cavour for the Teatro Petruzzelli, and the lanes of Bari Vecchia and the Basilica of San Nicola a few minutes north. Around Bari Centrale and Piazza Aldo Moro you trade some charm for convenience, with trains to Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Alberobello and Matera and the rail link to the airport. The Lungomare Nazario Sauro runs past Madonnella towards Pane e Pomodoro beach, good for sea views and evening walks, while Carrassi and Poggiofranco, south of the railway, suit drivers, congress visitors and quieter stays.
