Where should you stay in Catania?

Catania was rebuilt in black lava stone and pale limestone after the earthquake of 1693, and several of its hotels now occupy those Baroque palazzi. Around Piazza del Duomo and the old town you sleep a few steps from the Elephant Fountain and the morning fish market. The streets around the Teatro Massimo Bellini are the heart of the city’s evenings, with restaurants and bars in the surrounding lanes. Via Etnea, the long shopping street aimed straight at the volcano, leads past Villa Bellini towards quieter Liberty-era streets, while hotels near the station and Corso Sicilia suit early trains, the airport bus and day trips. On the Lungomare at Ognina the city meets its lava coast.
